Powder Coating Pt. 2: How is Powder Coating Applied and What Makes Durable?
Last month’s blog covered the basics of powder coating and why it’s preferred for our products here at K & K Manufacturing. This month, we’ll explore how and why it’s tough enough to stand up to nearly any situation or condition!
Step-by-Step: Applying Our Custom Powder Coating
1. Preparation is Key: We ensure each piece’s surface is clean, spotless, and ready to receive powder. We use sandblasting and chemical treatments to remove rust, old paint, or grime. Only the cleanest surfaces are approved to move forward in the process.
2. Application of Powder: An electrostatic spray gun gives the powder a positive charge, causing it to “stick” to metallic surfaces. This charged powder is applied evenly and uniformly, covering every surface, nook, and cranny.
3. Cure and Harden: Next, the coated items head into our massive 60-foot oven, where the real magic happens. The heat ramps up, melting the powder into a shiny, rigid shield ready to face off against whatever the elements throw its way.
What Makes Powder Coating Tough?
Coverage: Thanks to that electrostatic charge, the powder sticks evenly across surfaces, leaving no room for weak spots and no drips or runs. Our quality powder coating service provides solid, even protection that looks and functions great!
Bonding: In the oven, the powder doesn’t just dry; it chemically bonds to the surface, forming a highly protective barrier. This layer protects against scratches, chips, and rust from exposure to the elements. Additionally, it serves as a shell against the demands of everyday use.
Thick-Skinned but Flexible: Unlike traditional paint, our quality powder coating is thick enough to guard against damage but flexible enough to handle the slight bends and twists of usage without cracking under pressure.
At K & K Manufacturing, each project is tailored to meet the specific needs of our clients. We focus on the commercial and industrial challenges of transporting heavy materials, tools, and equipment. Our custom powder coating services are not just about applying a robust exterior; they’re about constructing durable, custom-built truck bodies, beds, and trailers that stand up to the rigors of heavy-duty use.
