
Truck Body and Trailer Design Engineer

Position Overview:
Provide accurate and timely product designs using customer specifications and/or custom truck body quotes. Design new products and improve existing products accurately and cost-effectively. Resolve any problems and/or questions incurred during production due to design errors or misinterpretation. Continually develop new processes to improve safety, quality, cost, and time to delivery.
Truck Body Design – Responsible for the detailed design of custom truck bodies
- Lead design efforts with Production Managers and the Sales team for assigned truck body projects including sheet metal and structural steel design
- Develop designs that emphasize safety, functionality, and constructability
- Develop initial bill of material (BOM) for new truck body designs including sheet metal parts, structural steel parts, and stocked / non-inventory parts
- Develop shop drawings for the fabrication of designed products
- Weight distribution and axle weight calculations of truck chassis using truck equipment industry-specific software. (preferred)
- Hold design reviews with the sales team and and/or customers
- Assist in specification and procurement of equipment used in truck body builds
- Designs should be stored in a highly organized structure that can be referenced throughout the engineering and production teams
Truck Equipment Upfit Design – Responsible for the detailed design of truck equipment installation layout for upfit projects
- The creation of truck equipment vehicle layout designs, including equipment layout, weight distribution, electrical components, and hydraulic components
- Used as a guide for the assembly of work trucks
- Used in support of quotations to customers
- Review of design concepts against customer specifications and requirements
- Develop shop drawings for the assembly of designed products including general layout of equipment, electrical, and hydraulic schematics
- Work with other equipment vendors to ensure functionality of all parts incorporated into the design of the work truck
Equipment Trailer Design – Responsible for the detailed design of custom trailer (preferred)
- Lead design efforts with Production Managers and the Sales team for assigned equipment and dump trailer projects
- Develop designs that emphasize safety, functionality, and constructability
- Develop initial bill of material (BOM) for new trailer designs including sheet metal parts, structural steel parts, and stocked / non-inventory parts
- Develop shop drawings for the fabrication of designed products
- Weight distribution and axle weight calculations of trailers
- Hold design reviews with the sales team and/or customers
- Assist in specification and procurement of equipment used in trailer builds
- Designs should be stored in a highly organize structure that can be referenced throughout the engineering and production teams
Day-to-day Tasks/Duties
- Design new truck bodies and trailers (50%)
- Produce shop drawings for fabrication of designed truck bodies (15%)
- Develop initial bill of material (BOM) for new truck builds (15%)
- Work with sales to correctly specify equipment to meet customer needs (<10%)
- Work with sales to quote custom components (design to quote) (<10%)
- Review & analyze existing truck body & trailer designs (<10%)
- Hold design reviews with sales and/or customers (<10%)
- Weight distribution and axle weight calculations (<10%)
Skills/Education
- Mechanical Engineering Degree
- Safe work habits and ability to maintain safe working conditions
- Proficient in CAD designs; Minimum five years of AutoCad experience (required) and Solidworks or Fusion 360 experience (required)
- Experience with sheet metal engineering (required)
- Practical experience in mechanical design, electrical, hydraulics, structural analysis, and vehicle layout
- High level of Mechanical Aptitude: ability to understand fundamentals of mechanical systems as related to the commercial truck industry
- Understanding of hydraulic and electrical schematics
- Mathematical skills
- Ability to multi-task and adjust priorities as shop and customer needs change
- Experience with work trucks, Heavy duty trucks and/or mobile equipment a plus

Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit/stand for up to 10 hours
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally
